Fun and wonderfully good little apple pies, shaped like spooky Halloween figures. It is easy to make your own pie dough in a food processor, and the pies are extra good with homemade dough.
How to make Halloween pies
-
Make the dough
Pulse the flour, butter and salt in the food processor until it resembles fine crumbs. Add the icing sugar and egg yolk, and run the machine for a few seconds. Add the ice-cold water a little at a time until the mixture comes together into a dough. -
Chill the dough
Tip the dough onto the worktop and gather it into a ball. Flatten it, wrap it in cling film and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. -
Make the filling
Core the apples and cut them into small cubes, approx. 1 × 1 cm – feel free to leave the skin on. Put the apples, sugar and cinnamon in a frying pan and simmer over a medium heat for 8–10 minutes until the apples are soft. Set aside. -
Cut out the shapes
Roll the dough out on a well-floured worktop until approx. ½ cm thick. Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter shaped like a pumpkin, ghost or another fun Halloween figure. Place half of the shapes on a baking tray lined with baking paper as bases, and put some apple filling in the middle of each. Cut faces into the remaining pumpkins, or suitable details into the other figures – these are the lids. -
Assemble
Lightly beat the egg and brush it around the filling, then place the lids on top. Seal the edges by pressing them together with a fork. Knead the leftover dough together, roll it out again and cut out more shapes. -
Bake
Brush the pies with egg and bake in the middle of the oven at 200 °C (conventional) for approx. 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
